Accounting

Accounting is the language of business, and as such, a critical part of society within a global economy.

Accounting is important to all businesses including for-profit and nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies. The accounting program at Wesleyan offers students the initial preparation needed to pursue a career as a certified public accountant (CPA), certified management accountant (CMA), certified internal auditor (CIA), and certified financial planner (CFP), to name just a few.

One of the greatest benefits of studying accounting within a liberal arts environment is the unique combination of courses students take – not just in accounting, but also in the humanities and social sciences. Additionally, the small classes at Wesleyan allow a great deal of personal interaction between students and faculty, and that means students can learn more about their individual interests within a vast array of career fields. Students also have many opportunities to develop their skills in research, ethical decision-making, leadership, communication, and problem solving.

Master the fundamentals of accounting as an undergraduate.

Accounting is one of the most popular majors at Wesleyan. Students become proficient in a highly-regarded profession that allows for many different career paths. Accounting majors participate in activities with a number of professional organizations each year, including the Georgia Society of CPAs, The Institute of Internal Auditors, and The Institute of Management Accountants. Additionally, accounting majors have benefitted from internships with various large to small international companies including several of the “Big 4” accounting firms. In recent years, Wesleyan students have successfully competed in the annual Institute of Internal Auditors Audit Case competition, placing among the top ten teams in the state and winning first and third places in two of the last three years.

Outside The Classroom

Wesleyan’s accounting majors receive much support from the accounting profession in Macon and around the State. Students can apply for various internships including participating in the Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). The program awards certificates in tax preparation from the Internal Revenue Service for providing tax return assistance to low- and middle-income taxpayers in the community. Students also interact with accounting professionals via the annual Accounting Open House hosted at Wesleyan, attend meetings and conferences of various accounting professional organizations in the State, and pursue research of accounting topics for their honors thesis.
