New World Experience Student

Arrival
The Office of International Student Services makes an effort to arrange airport pick-up for every new international student by a faculty member, staff member, or alumna. When you arrive on campus, a housing staff member will check you in to your residence.

Orientation
International students arrive on campus a few days early to get settled into their new surroundings and to learn a few things unique to them before joining all new students for Fall Orientation. During International Orientation, students learn about managing their visas, opening U.S. bank accounts, navigating the medical system, and more. International Orientation also includes an International Student Panel of experienced students from different countries who share their tips and tricks for making life at Wesleyan wonderful.

Residence Life
International students live among domestic and other international students in the residence halls. For more information on room assignments and amenities, visit the Residence Life page.

Food
Services Anderson Dining Hall at Wesleyan College offers a variety of foods to meet most dietary needs preferences. With rotating menus featuring cuisines from different countries – as well as a salad bar and pizza line daily – students are sure to find meals that suit their appetites. Students with particular dietary needs should contact the Director of Food Services for accommodations.

Packing
When you arrive in Macon, you will have an opportunity to buy most essentials, but you will want to bring some things from home. We recommend packing the following:

  • Clothes (Macon gets very hot in the summer (up to 100* F) and mild to cold in the winter (down to 25*F) with a few days of snow, occasionally.
  • Decorations and photos from home
  • A set of sheets and towels and a shower curtain (in case you arrive late at night and cannot go shopping immediately)

Your residence hall room is furnished with a bed, dresser, desk, and chair. You and your roommate may want to coordinate to buy curtains, trash cans, a mini refrigerator, television, coffee pot, etc.

Electronics
Many students wait until they arrive in the U.S. to buy items like laptop computers and tablets to ensure they are electrically compatible. There are a few computer labs on campus that are available for student use, but most students prefer to have their own devices.

Most foreign cell phones can be fitted with an American SIM card to receive service, or students can wait to buy new cell phones in the U.S.

The Wesleyan Wifi network works all over campus, so students can stay connected academically and socially.

Employment
Students on J-1 visas are not eligible to work in the United States. Students on F-1 visas may work on-campus through Work Study. Work study allows students to work part-time in campus departments and earn money through Financial Aid. Students must be awarded Work Study before seeking employment. Once a student is hired, she can apply for a Social Security Number and then begin working.

Career Services
Services of the Office of Career Development are available to all students, even those who plan to return to their home country or another country abroad for work. The Office of Career Development gives workshops, seminars, and one-on-one counseling on resumes, interviews, job seeking, networking, and other cross-cultural skills, and can even help students find employment after graduation in the U.S. and abroad.

Travel
International students are encouraged to travel when they have the opportunity, either through school-sponsored Study Abroad or independently with friends. However, it is crucial that students check in with the Office of International Student Services before they depart to make sure their immigration documents are all in order (i.e., not expired or nearing the program end-date). Most countries also require a visa, and the Office of International Student Services can also assist in that process.

Change in Program
If at any time a student changes her major, changes her graduation date, withdraws, transfers, or in any way changes her academic status, she must contact the Office of International Student Services to have her record updated.

Post-Graduation Plans
Many students choose to stay in the U.S. after graduation to attend graduate school or to work. Students should contact the Office of International Student Services in the junior year to discuss American graduate school options and Optional Practical Training in the U.S.
