As an institution, we believe strongly that it is essential for each student to develop knowledge and skills that can transfer to the workplace and to demonstrate their application through a practical experience. This, however, means more than just checking a box.
Wesleyan's From Here to Career program is about more than just securing a job or getting into graduate school. It is more than finding an internship. From Here to Career is about helping our students understand how their Wesleyan experience has uniquely prepared them for their next step in life. It is assistance in understanding how to navigate their own career development journey -- from refining their interests and goals to preparing a resume to succeeding in a job or graduate school interview. These are building blocks that they will continue to use the rest of their lives. That foundation starts right here, at Wesleyan College.
Every student will be able to articulate:

To fulfill her professional development experience, a component of Wesleyan's From Here to Career initiative, Mary assisted Dr. Karen Bray as the TA for Ethics 223. A religious studies and history double major Mary has built a relationship with Dr. Bray as an advisor and mentor. "Having completed this course two summers ago, I've gotten a different perspective of the course and gained insight into the behind-the-scenes aspects of leading a class. Dr. Bray has been the best at tirelessly guiding me through the levels of academic research, preparation, and professionalism that goes into coordinating an effective collegiate course. Overall, this experience has been very illuminating on the level of dedication and scholarship that professors culminate in post-grad fields, which is useful to me as I consider my own post-grad options."
From Here to Career is deeply embedded in Wesleyan's mission and sense of purpose. The Wesleyan College Center for Career Development's four year plan is designed to ensure that students make the most of their time at Wesleyan and are prepared for a successful career after graduation.
Students are introduced to the process of career development in their WISe 110 course. Students will complete a series of self-assessments to better understand their learning and working style.
Students dive further into what the career development process involves and how it will continue through different stages of their career. Students will begin to make the connection between their major field/courses and potential careers by attending events hosted by the career center.
Students are encouraged to complete their Professional Development -PDE experiential requirement. In the PDE 400 course students will either complete an internship, research project, performance/exhibit, or leadership/volunteer project in order to gain hands-on working experience relevant to their educational and career goals.
Students will complete the required Professional Development coursework with PDE 401. This seminar style course is designed to not only help students develop a post-graduate plan but also become more comfortable in articulating their skills and experiences. Through various simulation activities students will gain interview skills, resume writing practice, and personal statement/cover letter writing practice.
We have worked hard to make professional development more intentional and meaningful for our students throughout their four years at Wesleyan. What brings it all together is our great staff in the Center for Career Development. Their energy and excitement is inspiring!
From Here to Career is about being more intentional about the connection between a liberal arts degree and professional development. It's so exciting to see the students making those connections, even first-years who in their WISe seminars are talking about their callings, possible career paths, and their educational goals. This is something many college students don't reflect on until their senior year, but at Wesleyan these conversations begin on day one.
Comprised of only a few core components, From Here to Career can be tailored to the individual needs and goals of each Wesleyanne to ensure maximum impact and success.
Our goals are for our students to experience the connections between the liberal arts and the workplace, explore professional and career choices, and develop and demonstrate the knowledge and skills essential for professional success. We are educating our women towards a lifetime of career success.
